I mentioned earlier this week that I have an obsession with throw pillows! Especially those with quotes & sayings on them. My obsession aside, decorative pillows are the one item you can use to completely change the look of any room. You can totally re-decorate in less than an hour!

FREE & SIMPLE ARRANGEMENTS FOR FALL - THRIFTY LITTLE DECOR IDEAS

As the leaves start to turn each year, I love taking a nature walk and finding things that can be used inside to create Free & simple arrangements for fall!

I started about 15 years ago, harvesting Hydrangeas from an abondoned spot out in the country near where we lived. I remember feeling like I'd hit the lottery! They can be so hard to grow to the age that their heads are so large and in our local soil, color can be unpredictable. I was even more elated that very first year to find that they were growing roadside on our yearly trip to the mountains and I kid you not, we stopped over and over on our drive and I filled my trunk with them! They dry so beautifully and are perfect on the stems for an arrangement. You can also just cut the heads and fill a large bowl or basket for a very beautiful addition to any room.

This year, I simply cut a handful that were the shape and color I liked and stuck them in this vintage silver serving pitcher, to adorn the lazy susan I recently painted and distressed for my dining room table. It's a very simple look that adds a touch of elegance and softness to our everyday table!

Faux Hydrangeas can be quite pricey...even Amazon with their lower pricing, lists just ONE like this for $6.99 plus shipping!

I'm so very fortunate to live here in the south where cotton grows around every corner. I love the fields when they are all white...just beautiful! I can't resist grabbing a few stems every year. They are a unique addition in any kind of vase or container, whether rustic or elegant.

I always dry flowers and also pictured you see a few roses that I saved and they will be moving into my bedroom for another simple arrangement to add just a touch of color and beauty in a much needed spot!

I'll replace some of these with basic bare branches as we get closer to Christmas and adorn with lights or small ornaments and evergreen cuttings.

THRIFTY LITTLE CRAFT: PINECONE CHRISTMAS TREES

The following Thrifty Little Craft on PineCone Christmas Trees was completed and written by my Dad, Jim Kohn. His "Helper" is my youngest son, who is now 14! They completed this project every year for so many years and I have some beautiful Christmas Decorations that I will treasure for a lifetime!

The best part about it...you can probably round up the supplies you need already in your house or hit the $1 store for variations!

Miniature Christmas Trees Using Pine Cones
Supplies Needed:

Pine Cones, 6” to 8” Cones work well, though you can go bigger if you want. You can purchase Cones or take the kids on a field trip and let them find them theirselves; Coulter Pine Trees produce the larger Cones.

Colored Felt/Cotton Balls, Felt Balls hold together better **think tiny pom poms!

Spray Paint, I used Gold, but Silver or Green look very nice as well

Glitter

Kraft Glue - choose one that will dry sooner rather than later and make sure that it is Non-Toxic

Pipe Cleaners and or strings of small beads. If you have small children stick to the Pipe Cleaners as small beads may be a choking hazard.

Cut-outs or Foam shapes of Candy Canes, Trees, Reindeer or other Christmas items to top off the Pine Cone Tree or to use as decorations on or in your project.

Ready, Set, Go !

A moist cloth should be used to clean the Pine Cones then let dry. Try to use Cones with a flat Bottom as they will stand up better when displayed. Take the Cones outside to Spray Paint, not too heavy, and then sprinkle with glitter before the paints dries. KIDS are real good at putting on glitter - remember, this is “Christmas Crafts for Kids”. Allow plenty of time to dry.

Cover the Dining Room table with plenty of Newspaper to collect lose glitter and you're ready to decorate!

Have the kids glue on the colored balls first - any color anywhere is a good rule of thumb - they can’t go wrong.

Allow a few minutes to dry then add other items such as Christmas cut-outs, Sequins, Ribbons, buttons, yarn - the possibilities are endless.

Pipe Cleaners or Ribbon can be used for Garland by wrapping it nicely in and around the Pine Cone. Attach Pipe Cleaners end to end, using different colors or stick to one color - both ways look good.

If you have a small angel lay it in atop of the tree and glue it on three sides to provide stability. Anything your child would like to see atop the tree will also be the perfect choice, after all this is a Christmas Craft for, yup… KIDS!

YARD SALE CANDLESTICK MAKEOVER WITH PAINT - $2 PROJECT THIS WEEK

I've got a real quick $2 Yard Sale Candlestick Makeover that I did this past week for my daughter. Anyone can do this one, no craft genes required!

I grabbed this poor little worn out wooden candlestick at a local yard sale for 2 bucks, knowing all it needed was some paint and a little love :D



I first gave it a very thin and quick base coat of old white that I had on hand, and then I painted it using this fabulous shade I chose for my FREE Quart from Ace Hardware last weekend! I'm now in love with this color!



After drying overnight, I distressed a bit with my fine grade sand block and voila! - super quick & cheap fix to create a fabulous new candlestick that my daughter was all too eager to grab up for her new place.



Stay tuned this week - I've been doing so many projects this week and taking tons of pics. They should definately make up for my recent lack of posts :D

THRIFT STORE LAMP RE-DO

Just in case you haven't figured it out yet, can I tell you that I have a thing for Cherubs and Angels? I've had this obsession for as long as I can remember.

I found this little guy on one of my thrift store outings and grabbed him up for just 4 BUCKS! I LOVE thrift store Lamp Re-do finds and knew I could bring this little one some depth and dignity with a simple paint makeover.

In his previous life he had a bland, monotone gold spray paint finish that just didn't do all his details justice.

I gave him a coat of ASCP Old Ochre that I had leftover from another project and then hand rubbed dark wax into all his crevices to reveal such depth!

A new lamp shade and bulb and he took his place on my dining room credenza, highlighting some family treasures...what do you think ?

DIY FABRIC COVERED TOPIARIES FROM POSTERBOARD

I've got another NO CRAFT GENE REQUIRED Project for ya! This one might not even cost you a thing!

I hunted around the house for all that I needed to create these DIY Poster board Fabric Topiaries. I used a pair of old candlesticks, an old curtain and some broken costume jewelry and bead garland.

For the base, I used these old candlesticks and to hold the form onto them...yeppers, I hot glued an upside down paper bowl. On my other one, I had a small piece of floral foam that I cut and used.

To make the form for your topiary, simply use a piece of poster board paper that I had on hand for kids projects. You can grab it at your local dollar store - mine has them 2/$1.

Using the long side of the poster board, simply roll your paper until you have the point at the top and the width for the topiary you want. You'll cut down the bottom/uneven portion to leave yours at whatever height you like. I used shipping tape to secure it.

I cut fabric from an old/unused curtain I had hung onto because I loved the damask print. I also made a second one with even more of my leftover fabric from my dining room table re-do.

I then sprayed my posterboard form all over with an all purpose adhesive spray and rolled it onto the fabric. Smooth out any wrinkles and I didn't worry about the back side where the fabric edges meet - noone will ever see that part!

I used scrap edging and ribbons and then some sentimental broken pins, beads and pieces from old jewelry. You can decorate yours with anything you like...my Grandbaby helped me with mine and we had so much fun!

We still have to add some embellishments to the brown/black one, but I had to share that one too!

That's it! This one is very simple to do and beats paying upwards of $40 and much more for similar topiaries in stores!

I LOVE topiaries and the possibilities for styles with this project are limitless! They will make for some great gifts, too!

DIY SPICE CABINET ORGANIZATION

Have you been "PIN" -spired lately? I think Pinterest is making crafters and DIY'ers of so many that would never have attempted a project otherwise. Who can resist?

I was most recently inspired to organize my spice cabinet. That just doesn't quite sound like the mega job it was, so let me just tell you. I had bottles that had somehow overflown (like Karo syrup) and were literally stuck/glued to the cabinet, on top of spice spills galore and don't let me get started on all of the expiration dates that I hadn't seen *in YEARS* that I had to toss.

So....once that portion of the task was done, I was able to make things pretty in there.

Some on-hand vintage mason jars added to jelly jars from the dollar store and then a quick application of chalkboard sticker labels (They come in so many super cute styles & shapes!) and I thought I was SuperWoman.

What do you think? Less than 10 bucks and 30 minutes....another Thrifty Little Thing to make my life easier :D

FALL LETTER WREATH ALTERNATIVE

I've been on the hunt this past week for a budget friendly wreath for Fall and WOW...I've been blown away by prices - everything from handmade locally to WalMart. So, as usual, I decided I could probably put something together to meet the need and keep from breaking the bank!

I saw a super cute Fall letter wreath on Pinterest, that I thought was a perfect alternative for the front door. But, as I read the instructions I decided I was not crafty enough to attempt and I'm too impatient...I would have to hit the store and purchase modge podge & scrapbooking supplies and, did I mention I'm too impatient when I get an idea in my head?

So...Voila! My latest DIY On The Cheap inspired from a Pinterest Pin: My Fall Letter Wreath Alternative - hanging on my front door within 2 hours of my inspiration :D

Here's what I used -all of which I had on hand, except for the letters, which were about $2 each at Walmart.

Wide Ribbon

Glue Gun

Paint (any kind!)

Tape

Unfinished Wood Letters

Notice that I'm not being specific, because you can really use whatever type ribbon, paint or tape you have on hand. That's why this is DIY On A Budget!

* If your door is exposed to rain, you will want to use an exterior paint or use a spray sealant on your letters.

Paint the letters in your choice of colors and let them dry. Once dry, I chose to free hand polka dots, stripes,etc. - do what you feel inspired & are skilled to do. You could obviously get very formal with that, but I'm just not that picky or free-hand talented!.

Measure your ribbon by hanging on your door to see where it will fall and where you want the letters to fall. Remember to leave enough overlap onto the back of your door to secure with tape. I marked the back of mine as well as the general letter placement on the ribbon with a piece of chalk.

Place your dry, painted letters onto the ribbon and arrange how you want them. Hot glue onto the back of the letters to secure to ribbon. Keep in mind the spots of the letter that touch the ribbon so you don't glue to your table (like I did at first!).

Hang onto your door and use tape on the inside of the door for the main security and then secure as needed under the front of the ribbon. Snip the ends of your ribbon to make them pretty ;)

I tied a separate ribbon and hot glued it to the top because mine looked too plain. You could obviously do all sorts of things to spruce it up and embellish.

That's it!

No major crafting skills required, quick & most of all CHEAP :D

THRIFTY LITTLE THRIFT STORE FINDS TODAY

WOOHOO!! An impromptu thrift shopping spree made it's way into my schedule today! I soooo needed this "fix" too! I think I was on the verge of withdrawls...LOL

So check out my Thrifty Little finds from today!

I found this GORGEOUS Lamp base (very heavy)!I love the shape and the combo of gold & black. There are a few nicks/scratches that I will quickly & easily rub with some gold acrylic paint, and then add a very beautiful shade to it...I'm thinking I will redo an existing shade I have with some black and gold trim for embellishment and possibly some beading! And how much did I pay for this beauty? $5.oo yeppers, 5 bucks !

Then I found this beautiful plum/eggplant & green velvet pillow that is embellished with beads, sequins, etc. It is soooo me and I had to have it! $2.00

The other pillow, which I absolutely love, says " A day hemmed in Prayer is less likely to unravel " LOVE THIS!!!
Huge pricetag of $1.00 (love it!)

Then there is the cutest homemade framed monogram letter "L" (My last name is Little!) with zebra print and crystals...you know I couldn't walk away from that! LOL So there goes another $1.00

I got 2 11x13 Frames, much needed for some new pics of my Grandbaby :D These were $1 each so $2.00

The other 2 little architectural shaped items and a cup/candy bowl I got out of the FREE box of items they had by the door! Yes, FREE. And I LOVE these to use on my bookshelves, etc. to break up the shapes & textures.

So, everything you see pictured cost me a total of $11.00

Another great thrify little shopping trip and now I have some projects and redecorating to do!

THRIFTY LITTLE YARD SALE FINDS TODAY

Fridays are turning out to be awesome Yard Sale Days! This year my youngest son has baseball games on Saturday mornings, so I've missed out on some Early Spring Yard Sales but am quickly making up for it on Fridays!
When I am Yard Saling (is that a word?), I am on a mission! I print out a list from the classifieds with the addresses, stop at the ATM and get 20 bucks ( which is my limit on any yard sale day!)and map out my route. Today I had a total of 7 yard sales to hit, which is pretty good for a Friday!
Here are my Frugal Fabulous Yard Sale Finds from today:
Pair of Candle Holders, store tagged on the bottom at $29.99 each, I paid $1 each These will look great on my mantle!
Pet Taxi - oversized - these are always so pricey! I don't have one because I would never pay the retail price($40 and up for this size). They had it yard sale priced for $5 and I snagged it for $3 ! This will come in handy when taking Chloe and Phoenix to the Vet!
Strip of Track Lighting with 3 lights Very pricey in stores - Marked at $2, I got it for $1 and will re-sell it for considerably more either on Ebay or at my Flea Market Booth!
Brand New Pair of Shoes I paid $1 for these, I just thought they were cute!
2 Brand New Lancome Totes Very cute with leopard print interior, I paid .50cents each for these and also got the pink Hot Tools bag
Brand New HardBack Book - "The Gluten Connection" I paid .50cents for it and will re-sell it on Amazon for considerably more.

I saw lots of great deals that I had to restrain myself from! One yard sale had a fairly new double seat wicker bench that was priced at $10. I wanted to offer them $8 , but knew that my house is already overflowing and I had nowhere to put it! If I thought I could have gotten it in my car, it would have been a great money maker for the flea market! But I passed and someone else will get a great deal!

Overall a pretty good yard sale trip today. What have you found at a yard sale or thrifty shopping trip lately?
