THRIFTY LITTLE THINGS STORE IN ALBEMARLE

I've been slack blogging lately, but for good reason!

Since I closed the former Shops On Depot store that I had taken over from a friend, I have really wanted my own place, not just for the store, but for workshop space, storage for projects in the works and also a Studio to hold my classes in. Honestly, those were my favorite things about the former shop. Since I had taken over ownership of that store, it was setup and run in many ways that would have been different had it been mine from the start. Don't get me wrong, it was an awesome experience, I had wonderful vendors and our customer base grew daily. It was exciting to see my vendors doing so well, but it became much more "work" and requirement of me than I was ready for at that point in my life.

The old downtown building that store was in was beyond costly to heat and cool and in taking over that shop, in addition to assuming what was already in place...costly vendor software, security system, insurance and all else that goes along with running a shop of that size and amount of vendors.

When the stress began to bleed into my personal life, I hired several people for various aspects of running the store, painting furniture, etc. Little did I know, that would hurt me more than help.

In my personal life, I was dealing with so much. My adult daughter is bi-polar and at that time was struggling, off her medication and self medicating with an addiction that was taking it's toll on our entire family. That, along with all else going on personally at the time would have been enough to cause most anyone to need to pause, and so I took the advice of a couple I hired and allowed them to manage the store, including the financial end of things, so that I could get re-focused and de-stress.

Needless to say, as I mentioned that hiring assistance hurt more than helped, the entire time I was "away", not a single cash deposit was made. The only funds that went into the bank were what was automated - credit cards. By the time I realized this, the damage was beyond repair and combined with my personal life at the time, I just could not see past the moment and decided to close.

It took me the entire year and then some to get over having been wronged by people that I trusted so openly. And to forgive those that were involved in teaming up with them, unknowingly, and trying to damage my name as a means of shadowing what they had done. The lies that they created and tried so very hard to get others to believe were only a reflection of them. My vendors who had been with me so long, as well as those who knew me on a personal level knew better. Still the bottom line with the huge bills at our location and my personal situation made it a relief to close the store at the time. It was bigger than I ever intended it to be, which was wonderful, but not what I needed or wanted at that point in my life.

I was so happy to go back to just doing what I love, painting furniture! However, I missed having the workshop and began to really want a space of my own...just a little place where I could work and show my pieces. Nothing huge or in any way as big as the former shop.

I believe everything happens for a reason, and how I came to finally decide to pursue a store for Thrifty Little Things now seems so meant to be. God always has perfect timing. Sometimes, circumstances that seem unfair or negative in the moment turn out to be His way of pushing us through a door we might otherwise have only stared at.

For the past several years, I had maintained my booth in a local antique mall. I also taught classes for their brand of paint. My 20 year history with all brands and types of paints eventually led me to the decision to no longer promote that brand because I felt that I was misleading customers. It looked great and painted well, but over time, I began to realize that the pieces I painted wore very easily and excessively. Although my promotion of that paint brand had nothing to do with my booth which had been their long before that paint even existed, once I told them I would no longer promote the brand, I was told I had 30 days to dismantle my booth. I was shocked and at the time upset, because one thing had nothing to do with the other. But I now know it was God's way of pushing me to the next level. I would have never moved out of that booth, otherwise.

And so, here I am! The perfect location became available the same week that I found out I had to move my booth. One thing led to the next and Thrifty Little Things store is in the works!

I can't wait to share photos and more details of the new shop with you all. I have great plans for it! However, it will be my own small space, with workshop, Studio classroom and all that I want for my own business, just how I want it, so that my passion continues to be my passion :D

Stay tuned! We're opening soon and the first Chalk Paint class in The Studio is October 15th!

DOWNSIZING FOR A PURPOSE: WHAT I GAVE UP & WHY I'M HAPPIER

We've all heard the buzz about downsizing for a purpose, NOT keeping up with the Jones's, and the new quite popular trend of "tiny houses".

Though very few know it, including some of my dearest friends, I've decided to share what I gave up and why I'm happier.

The past year has been a whirlwind for me, emotionally, physically, financially...you name it!

I have faced the reality of life as the mother of an adult daughter with a mental illness, as well as a drug addiction. The effects of both mental illness and addiction are far reaching and at times, crippling. I journeyed through to find my way, rid myself of any guilt or shame and focus on meeting the needs of my other children, as well as helping them to hate the diseases instead of their sister. As a mom, no matter how old your children are, we are still rarely allowed to just experience such heartaches only thinking of ourselves. We must still press on and do damage control for the rest of the family. Maybe that is what keeps us from totally losing it!

In addition, the past year held the triumph of love in my life and much later, going through an entire grieving and healing process as that relationship ended. I do believe we grieve all losses and I can pinpoint the stages I had to go through and the healing that came from it.

My youngest son started high school this year and for the first time in his life, instead of being with me all week and his Dad on weekends, for the sake of his education in a better school system, he enrolled 2 hours away where his Father lives. I now see him only on weekends. This was a first in 14+ years and a major change that effected me emotionally on so many levels. After talking to my very intelligent son, I can honestly say that I am so proud that he is more focused on his education and college goals. The high school he attends is well known for academics and my son who always easily made honor roll is having to work very hard to keep up. It is a challenge that he would not have received in my county, unfortunately.

I also had the mixed emotions of closing my store. It was a very hard decision to make, but ultimately intertwined with all that was going on in my personal life, not to mention the climbing bills of the building we were in that kept putting me in the hole. My desire to just get rid of all unnecessary headaches and stress in my life grew daily. So we closed our doors on July 1st.

Once the store was closed, I decided it was time for major changes to get my life back on track personally and financially. But where to start?

As Dave Ramsey says, “If you will live like no one else, later you can live like no one else.”

And with that...I left my 2800 square foot home, got rid of loads and loads of "stuff" and moved into a small rental ( only 2 bedrooms - really looks more like 1 and a half! ) out in the country.

From the road, noone would ever imagine that I lived in my current spot. I don't know if that is good or bad (Pride?).

What I do know is that my monthly payment is less than half of what I've been paying for years. And as far as looks, inside and out...I decided before I ever saw the place that I would take it because I have been blessed with this little known talent of being able to "makeover" anything and everything :D And that is exactly what I am in the process of doing!

I plan to use my time here to replace the savings funds that were eaten up by my store and re-focus my resale business and other money making endeavors. I've been the single income supporter of myself and my children since 2004. Another of my loves and talents has always been living on a budget and making it work, regardless of income or expenses. I've lived life with well more than enough, lived where I wondered where it was going to come from and everywhere in between. I have no doubt that I will use this time to get back to the financial level that is most comfortable for me to provide for myself and my children.

Meanwhile, I am....

enjoying less clutter...less space to clean....more time to myself...quiet beautiful country mornings and a peace that I have not had for quite some time.
I have downsized for a purpose....but do plan to enjoy every minute of it. And who knows...I may never want to "upsize" after this! I mean, AFTER ALL, I really AM the queen of thrifting and living life on less ;)

There is much truth to the saying that less is more. I am living in the proof of it daily.

Have you done any downsizing or major life changes to pursue further goals? I'd love to hear about it with a comment below!

THRIFTY LITTLE LIFE: HOW TO CREATE A BUDGET { FOR BEGINNERS }

The envelope system is very basic, but generally a very successful way to make a budget. It is a bit primitive in our technologically advanced society. But most Americans are in debt up to their eyeballs, largely due to the fact that technology has made it very easy to go in debt. So, if primitive works, why not do it?

1.I would suggest paying all of your BILLS (Mortgage, Electric, Phone, etc.) from your checking account, and then I would use the envelope system for the remaining money.

2.Make your list of items that you need to budget for (groceries, gas, entertainment, clothing, etc.). For this system, make the categories as specific as possible.

3.Now that you have a list, estimate a monthly or bi-monthly dollar amount that you will need next to each item. If you don’t have good records of your spending, this may take a couple months to get this right.

4.Buy a box of envelopes, get out a big, stinky Sharpie marker and write a name on each envelope (groceries, gas, entertainment, etc.).

5.Go grab the cash from the ATM and fill up each envelope with the allocated amount. The key to this system is that when the envelope is empty, you are FINISHED spending for that period. It forces you to plan ahead based on how much money is allocated.

I think it is a good idea to create a MISCELLANEOUS envelope, I promise that you will find something to use it on that you had not planned and if you don’t, then let it keep getting bigger until you do. Because you will use it eventually. You will have to make adjustments the first few months, but just start somewhere and keep tweaking it until it is just right.

MERRY CHRISTMAS from THRIFTY LITTLE THINGS 2012

Since I'm typing and it is now 7:30 AM on 12/21/2012, I'm gonna assume that the world did not end as anticipated by the Mayan Calendar.

Thank goodness....as I had not yet put my Merry Christmas post up :D

I just wanted to take a moment to wish you all a wonder filled CHRISTmas and pray the coming days are spent with less hustle & bustle and more tiny moments that bring peace to your heart and make you smile.
Side note...my mantel is missing 2 stockings as my oldest hunts her room where she decided to store them "for me" last year....hmmmm, yes, that's the kind of "norm" we have at my house. Absolutely no illusions of perfection here...

:D

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

DON'T FORGET THE SPARKLE - THE LITTLE CHRISTMAS TREE 2012

With all of my favorite bloggers and friends sharing their beautiful Christmas trees & decor this year, I decided it was time to share a peek at The "Little" tree for 2012....undoubtably the most imperfect of trees amidst the blogosphere this year.

My youngest son is now 12, soon to be 13, and this is the first year he didn't have much interest in decorating the tree. With my oldest already 21 and 17, that left me by myself. Which was not as fun as years past. Any soon to be empty nesters, agree?

So, I took my time and carefully hung each of my coveted angels. A collection started many years ago by happenstance. My mother began giving me a new, unique angel every year and I love unpacking them each year.
Then I moved on to all the other ornaments and those that make me smile like the kids pictures when they were in grade school.
And then I was done. And something seemed to be missing. For the past week I have walked by the tree with sort of a "ho-hum" feeling. Unsure what it was missing and blaming it on myself for not having the mega Christmas spirit as so many years past when my kids were little and anxiously awaiting Santa.

My 3 year old GRANDbaby came to spend the night tonight. She came into the kitchen where I was prepping supper and yells "Mimi....come look what I did!!"
What a surprise...and I really, literally, cried. Mostly because I remember the days when my own kids would have gotten in BIG trouble for messing with Mommy's "special ornaments" and re-arranging the tree. Boy, if I knew then what I know now....

She took all of her necklaces, bracelets and sparkly jewelry and hung it on the tree.

Now THAT is what Christmas is about. Not the perfectly decorated tree...

So, here's our very imperfect tree this year that I absolutely adore. And gratitude to my GRANDbaby for reminding me that it's the SPARKLE that matters the most.

I FELL IN LOVE WITH PAINT IN 1995 - MY PASSION MEMOIR

While cleaning and dusting all those things that NEVER get dusted here at home this week - you know,.... picture frames, wall hangings and the like, I found myself caught in a flashback as I took this piece off the wall, where I have it hanging above a doorway.

It occurred to me that this piece represents where it all began for me. Circa 1995, before my youngest was born, while my other 2 were ages 3 and 7. I was deeply rooted in my stay at home mom position and spent the majority of my time curb hunting and painting anything and everything I could get my hands on. This was long before I knew anything about painting, Chalk Paint and the like. I just knew that I loved a chippy, not-so-perfect finish with a little glam (hence the gold). I had no clue how the high end retailers got the look and this was long before it was ever talked about or publicized. So, I made my own recipe.

Cheap, Flat, off-white interior wall paint. Yeppers....At that time, I could get an entire gallon for just 10 bucks at Wally world. Dry brushing, I discovered by accident and became obsessed fell in love with it. Gold and Silver acrylic glaze were my new best friend.

As I cleaned all those beautiful and intricate details of this family piece that once adorned a mirror not furtunate enough to make it's way to 2012, I smiled, knowing that I could do this beauty much more justice now with the added knowledge, upgraded paint and tools.

But....I think I'd rather remember where I came from, through my own trial and errors, on my own and purely from my own passion, before anyone game me a direction to go to.

So, I hung her back up. And smiled.

Do you have a passion that has stood the test of time? I'd love to hear about it in a comment below!
