HOMEMADE MACARONI & CHEESE: FAMILY RECIPE REVEAL

I thought this was the perfect time for me to share what I'm taking as a side to our family Thanksgiving Dinner. It's a family favorite, the recipe passed down through many generations, my MawMaw's Homemade Macaroni & Cheese :D

It’s really so simple to make, but you’d never know it by the look or taste of this huge dish of Macaroni & Cheese – a favorite for any family get together or any event requiring you to bring a dish that can feed a crowd.

INGREDIENTS:

1 Lb box of Elbow Macaroni ( I prefer & use the larger Ziti pasta )
1 Lb block of Mild Cheddar ( or 16oz pre-shredded )
1 Lb block of Sharp Cheddar ( or 16oz pre-shredded )
Milk
Butter
Salt

Boil Noodles in large pot until very soft – add 1 tablespoon Salt while boiling
Grate Cheese if using blocks
Use cooking spray lightly on a 16 x 9 Large Baking Dish
Will create 3 “layers” with ingredients, starting with noodles
Alternate adding noodles, cheese and pads of butter
Save a small amount of Sharp cheddar to finish off the top layer
Once you’ve used all ingredients and dish is full, pour Milk slowly until about 1/3 full from bottom (best if using clear glass so you can see)
Bake at 350 degrees for about 40 minutes – until you see cheese begin to brown & bubble on top

And there you have it...my multi-generational family secret recipe, now revealed on the internet (oops! Sorry, MawMaw !)

NESCAFE WITH COFFEE-MATE GIVEAWAY + .75 OFF COUPON: 2-in-1 COFFEE & CREAMER COMBO

I was super excited to be among the first to try the brand new Nescafe with Coffee-Mate! It's a 2-in-1 Coffee & Creamer Combo, so you get your Coffee & Creamer all in one package!

It comes in various flavors including French Vanilla, Hazelnut and Sweet & Creamy Original.

I got my favorite, French Vanilla. Just opening the canister and smelling it had me ready to try it! I love the smell of french vanilla coffee, especially this time of year!

Nescafe with Coffee-Mate is a brand new product and after trying it, I'm sure it soon to become a favorite in households all over!

To be honest, I wasn't sure if I would like it because it is an instant coffee. However, let me tell you that the ease of adding just 2 spoonfuls to my cup of hot water was nice. Then I was blown away once I tasted it. The aroma did not steer me wrong! I love lots of cream & sugar in my coffee and if I had not known it was instant, I would have never guessed!

The flavor was so rich and creamy, I didn't add any sugar at all! It was fabulous and just what I needed tonight in our abnormally cold weather so early in the year.

Being that this is an instant coffee with creamer all in one package, how perfect for a long road trip! All you need to do is add not water!

I loved it and if you like coffee as much as I do, I know you will too!

That's why I'm excited to get to share this coupon with EVERYONE....
Click here for $0.75 off the NEW Nescafe Coffeemate

DIY SHUTTER SHELF WINDOW TOPPER INSTEAD OF CURTAINS

Since my downsizing I've had to get creative with extra storage and display spaces for decor. I love all my vintage kitchen goodies, but didn't have enough wall space for a lot of shelving or a hutch. So I came up with this easy DIY Shutter Shelf Window Topper to use in place of curtains or a valance for the large 3 window wall in my kitchen.

I distressed this old shutter style Bi-fold closet door with
Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Paris Gray. The length was a perfect for the look I wanted above the 3 windows. You can find these at yard sales, thrift stores and the like, usually under $10!
I then got 2 wood shelf brackets (you could go with any style or material of bracket) and attached them at each end of the shelf. Your cost for the brackets could be anywhere from $1-2 for plain
metal shelf brackets at Lowe's and up, depending on what type and style you choose. I hung them upside down so it could be used as a topper shelf versus underneath as a regular shelf (windows would have been in the way!) I painted them to match.

I secured the center, for weight with another small
L angle metal bracket that you cannot see - one end screwed into the shelf, the other to the wall.

Once I had the shutter shelf hung above the window, I proceded to add some of my favorite things to display. You could display a full set of plates, collections or whatever you like. Mine is a mixture of things I have collected over the years that I love to see often and make me smile.
What do you think? It was really simple to do and I'm so glad I found space to display some of my pretties. It added a whole new look to that window wall, as well!

TALL DARK AND STOUT CHOCOLATE LAYER CAKE: THRIFTY LITTLE RECIPE

I've got a sinfully scrumptious, Tall Dark and Stout Chocolate Layer Cake to add to the Thrifty Little Recipe List. This aweseome recipe was provided to me by Betty Crocker and was part of a collection of recipes featured in their Betty Brackets in basketball playoff season. It was so good, I had to share it here!

I admit I questioned the beer ingredient, but learned quite a lot about why so many recipes now include it! There is an awesome bakery in New York that bakes cupcakes and sweets of all sorts and their main ingredient is beer!

Some interesting tips about cooking with beer:
Beer has a tenderizing effect and is a perfect matchup for meat-based recipes
Beer helps keep baked good moist and fresh, while adding a little extra puff
The beer flavors will be enhanced in those recipes with a longer cooking time
Craft beers are ideal as a cooking ingredient due to the quality and variety of flavors available

I love this recipe because it has minimal ingredient requirements and is budget friendly !

Tall, Dark and Stout Chocolate Layer Cake – Rich layers of chocolate cake, combined with stout beer and caramel, make for an extra-dreamy dessert indulgence.

PREP TIME:
40 min

TOTAL TIME:
6 hr 30 min

SERVINGS:
16

CAKE INGREDIENTS:
1 box of Betty Crocker® SuperMoist® devil’s food cake mix
1 1/4 cups stout beer
1/3 cup vegetable oil
3 eggs

CHOCOLATE FROSTING INGREDIENTS:
12 oz semisweet baking chocolate, finely chopped
1 1/2 cups whipping cream
1/2 cup butter

CARAMEL FILLING:
6 tablespoons caramel topping

STEP 1:
Heat oven to 350°F (325°F for dark or nonstick pans). Grease bottoms only of three 9- or 8-inch round cake pans. Make cake batter as directed on box, using cake mix, beer, the oil and eggs. Pour about 1 1/2 cups batter into each pan.

STEP 2:
Bake 18 to 22 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes before removing from pans. Cool completely.

STEP 3:
Meanwhile, for frosting, place chocolate in medium mixing bowl. In 2-quart saucepan, heat whipping cream and butter to just boiling over medium heat. Pour cream mixture over chocolate; stir with whisk until melted and smooth. Cover and refrigerate about 3 to 4 hours or until spreading consistency.

STEP 4:
Place 1 cake layer on serving plate. Frost top of layer with 1 cup of the frosting. Drizzle with 3 tablespoons caramel topping. Top with another cake layer, 1 cup of the frosting and remaining 3 tablespoons caramel topping. Top with remaining cake layer and frosting. Garnish with chunks of chocolate covered caramels with sea salt, if desired. Refrigerate cake at least 2 hours before serving. Store loosely covered in refrigerator.

All I can say is ….Yum !! And don’t forget to getBetty Crocker Coupons for your ingredients!

Will you be testing this one out ?

FREE & SIMPLE ARRANGEMENTS FOR FALL - THRIFTY LITTLE DECOR IDEAS

As the leaves start to turn each year, I love taking a nature walk and finding things that can be used inside to create Free & simple arrangements for fall!

I started about 15 years ago, harvesting Hydrangeas from an abondoned spot out in the country near where we lived. I remember feeling like I'd hit the lottery! They can be so hard to grow to the age that their heads are so large and in our local soil, color can be unpredictable. I was even more elated that very first year to find that they were growing roadside on our yearly trip to the mountains and I kid you not, we stopped over and over on our drive and I filled my trunk with them! They dry so beautifully and are perfect on the stems for an arrangement. You can also just cut the heads and fill a large bowl or basket for a very beautiful addition to any room.

This year, I simply cut a handful that were the shape and color I liked and stuck them in this vintage silver serving pitcher, to adorn the lazy susan I recently painted and distressed for my dining room table. It's a very simple look that adds a touch of elegance and softness to our everyday table!
Faux Hydrangeas can be quite pricey...even Amazon with their lower pricing, lists just ONE like this for $6.99 plus shipping!
I'm so very fortunate to live here in the south where cotton grows around every corner. I love the fields when they are all white...just beautiful! I can't resist grabbing a few stems every year. They are a unique addition in any kind of vase or container, whether rustic or elegant.
I always dry flowers and also pictured you see a few roses that I saved and they will be moving into my bedroom for another simple arrangement to add just a touch of color and beauty in a much needed spot!

I'll replace some of these with basic bare branches as we get closer to Christmas and adorn with lights or small ornaments and evergreen cuttings.

Are you taking advantage of the free and beautiful treasures right outside your door? I'd love to hear other ideas!
